Permits are on sale now for the May 3 spring post-wide Garage Sale. The Garage Sale is held on the hard stand south of the Fort Sill Federal Credit Union parking lot and in front of on-post quarters. Stop by the Outdoor Equipment Checkout Center in the RecPlex, 2502 Sheridan Road, or in Building 4700 and pick up your permit. Permits cost $15 for space in the hardstand lot south of the Fort Sill Federal Credit Union. For those living in on-post quarters, permits cost $8. Tour of the Wichitas slated for May 3...back to top
Make plans to take the family on a bicycle ride through the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Meers and an historic tour of Fort Sill with the Tour of the Wichitas, May 3 beginning at 8 a.m. The tour is a combined effort of Morale Welfare and Recreation and the Friends of the Trail. Choose a 40-mile, 50-mile, or 60-mile ride. Packets may be picked up between 7 and 8 a.m. at the Museum of the Great Plains, 6th and Ferris, in Lawton.

The Freedom’s Thunder Motorcycle Safety Rally is May 9 at the Fort Sill Polo Field. The rally focuses on reinforcing adherence to Fort Sill motorcycle safety rules and regulations and awareness by citizens of the surrounding communities. Registration begins at 7 a.m. A safety briefing begins the event and motorcyclists will ride through Lawton and the surrounding area, ending up back on the Polo Field for a catered lunch. Movies in the Park slated for May 23, Academic Heights...back to top
MWR takes the latest movies to post neighborhoods with a large 20-foot movie screen. The traveling movie screen will be set up May 23 at 6:30 p.m. in Academic Heights. The movie starts when it gets dark. The May movie is Ratatouille. BOSS will sell popcorn, cold sodas and other goodies to benefit the single Soldiers’ fund. Each area will be sprayed in advance for bugs.

Post outdoor pools open May 24 to MWR patrons for the season. Recreational swimming is free this year – thanks to the Army Family Covenant. A new water spray park will open with a ceremony after the Memorial Day weekend. The spray park, at the intersection of Fort Sill Blvd. and King Road and across the street from the new Boundless Playground, will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The summer season for Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area opens May 24 to May 26 with the Summer Season Kickoff Weekend. The Lodge snack bar is available Friday through Sunday and holidays, and the country store is available Wednesday through Sunday and holidays throughout the summer season. The slide, beach with lifeguards, watercraft rentals, mini-golf, the lodge snack bar and country store are available on weekends throughout the summer season. LETRA gate fee for military is $5 per car; and for civilians the cost is $6 per car. Season passes go on sale May 19 for a one-time cost of $20 per car for military and $25 for civilians for the first pass. Additional car passes may be purchased at half price thereafter. The Rinehart Fitness Center is undergoing a renovation which began in April but the indoor pool will remain open until May 24 to ensure continuous swimming on post. The Rinehart Fitness Center will reopen in mid-November.

Child and Youth Services are now taking registration for the free Operation Green summer camp June 22 through 27. There is space available for 225 children ages 6 to 18 years old. Children will participate in activities including: a day at LETRA; golfing; bowling; Fort Sill Ropes Course; field trips and games. Any child of a Soldier or DoD civilian that is within 30 days of deployment, currently deployed or has returned within the last 60 days of deployment in support of the global war on terrorism will have priority consideration. Please provide a copy of the deployment orders with the application. All other MWR eligible patrons will be considered based on availability and by the date of their application. Child and Youth Services no longer charge a registration fee. Fort Sill Child and Youth Services offer expanded benefits. Benefits include increased respite care hours, reduced fees for child, youth, instructional programs, and hourly care rate reduction. Benefit eligibility depends on mission category: Mission Level I: Deployed Soldiers or Department of the Army Civilians (DACs) (includes 30 days before and 60 days after return) and families of wounded or fallen Soldiers. Mission Level II: Unaccompanied Permanent or temporary change of station TDY (90-179 days) Mission Level III: Rear Detachment Cadre families. Free Learn to Swim Classes offered for all ages at Rinehart...back to top
Learn to swim classes are available at Rinehart Fitness Center indoor pool for everyone from 6 months old to adult (16 and over). Classes meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the time varies by level. Students who have never taken lessons before should begin no higher than Level 2, regardless of age (Levels 2-6 have prerequisites for advancing to a new level). Swim classes are now offered for adults too. Adult swim classes will be tailored to meet individual needs of each participant age 16 or older while learning how to enjoy the water. Students will learn floating techniques, survival skills, basic swimming strokes, or get the coaching you need for the big meet or as an alternative to traditional exercise routines. Sessions consist of four 30 minute classes and will be held at the Rinehart indoor pool. Classes will start promptly at their designated times. All levels of ability welcome. Cost is $15 per session. Class times are Wednesdays from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

The Army Community Service Exceptional Family Member Program is once again partnering with Lawton Public Schools to offer Camp Cowabunga. The day camp is open to special needs children ages 6 through 22, and their siblings ages 7 through 18, in the Lawton-Fort Sill community. Camp dates are July 21 through 31. Open registration will be offered May 1 through 31 with the updated 2008 applications available through Army Community Service, at the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Child and Youth Services Registration website and through Lawton Public Schools. Applications must be mailed, faxed or delivered in person to the ACS EFMP office. Space is limited and slots will be filled as applications are received. Newcomers Meetings are held every Tuesday at 8 a.m. in Room 216, on the second floor of Building 4700. All newly arrived Soldiers and family members are invited to attend this information briefing to find out more about facilities and programs offered on Fort Sill. Parent Support Group is held every Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the basement of Building 4700. The brown bag lunch is open to all new parents including single Soldier parents. The meeting is facilitated by a registered nurse and lactation specialist. Parents can get answers to things like what works for other parents to soothing a crying baby. The Explorer’s Club is every Tuesday from 2 to 3 p.m. in the basement of Building 4700 near the Play Zone. Learn infant and toddler sign language, participate in activities with music, arts and crafts, reading and language, and gross motor skills. The Army Community Services Relocation Office offers the Culture Connection group meetings for foreign-born spouses and family members. Waiting Families is a group designed to help support spouses and family members that are living without their Service Member for mission requirements. This outreach effort has a target audience of individuals without an FRG or other support mechanism. The group meets monthly with a guest speaker and a needs directed presentation. The Fort Sill Family and Community Team Session (SillFACTS) meeting is May 6. The philosophy of this monthly meeting is to improve the quality of life and delivery of human services on Fort Sill. The meeting also serves as a focal point for information exchange on matters of community interest and increases communication and interaction between Fort Sill units/directorates/activities. The meeting is open to the public and normally lasts about one hour.
