The FAQs (Frequently asked Questions) About School Enrollment

  • Where will my child go to school?
While the majority of military families, both on and off post, are served by Lawton Public Schools, our area also encompasses a few independent school districts including Bishop, Cache, and Flower Mound School Districts. This diversity may cause some confusion when you attempt to register, as the physical proximity of your home to a school is not always an indication of attendance eligibility. It is recommended you check with a reliable source such as LPS Student Services (357-6900) or School Liaison Services (442-4190) to confirm the district in which you live.
  • What do I need to know to enroll my child in Pre-K?
Children entering Pre-Kindergarten program must be 4 years old on or before 1 September of the current year. Required documents include immunization records, certified birth certificate, and child’s Social Security number. Registration differs each year, contact the School Liaison Officer for current information, 442.4190. Placement is on a first-come, first-served basis. Keep in mind that when your child enters Kindergarten, they will be required to attend the school that serves your area. Transportation for Pre-K students is the responsibility of the parents. LPS does not transport children until Kindergarten.
  • What do I need to know to enroll my Kindergartener?
Children entering Kindergarten must be 5 years old on or before 1 September of the current year. Required documents include immunization records, certified birth certificate, and child’s Social Security number. Registration dates and times change each year. Call the School Liaison Officer at 442-4190 for current information.
  • What do I need to know to enroll my First-Grader?
Children entering first grade must be 6 years old on or before 1 September of the current year, unless the child legally completed Kindergarten in another state. Required documents include immunization records, certified birth certificates, child’s Social Security number, and documents from previous schools.
  • What do I need to know to enroll my Second through Fifth Grader?
Elementary school configuration is from Kindergarten to fifth grade. Required documents include immunization records and records from previous schools such as withdrawal papers, reports cards, and copies of transcripts.
  • What do I need to know to enroll my Sixth through Twelfth-Grader?
Middle School includes grades Six through Eight. High School includes grades Nine through Twelve. Required documents for enrollment include immunization records and records from previous schools such as withdrawal papers, reports cards, and copies of transcripts. Middle and High Schools are open all summer for new student registration. You can register at the Lawton Public School Centralized Enrollment Center, which is located at Central Middle School (1201 Northwest Fort Sill Boulevard Lawton, OK 73507-5447). The hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The Enrollment Center will be at Central Middle School during June and July. It will be relocated to a permanent location effective August 2, 2010. Their phone number is (580) 248-7704. It is recommended that these students register as soon as possible to receive the widest variety of course offerings.

At this stage in their education, many military-connected students encounter difficulties that can have a profound effect on careers and vocations. It is very important while registering for these grades to ask questions about Oklahoma graduation requirements and to convey to guidance counselors a student’s intentions after graduating. The more complete the documentation you provide during registration, the better you enable a school to place your child into appropriate classes.

School Liaison Services (442-4190) has more, valuable information regarding the unique challenges facing secondary students.
