Fort Sill Family and MWR has joined the Fit Kids of Southwest Oklahoma coalition to fight against Childhood Obesity. Childhood Obesity is the greatest health threat facing our children and arguably our state today. The fact that the CDC and other leading health experts predict that this generation of children will be the first that will not out live their parents due to the health implications of obesity is deplorable. This profound statement is the driving force behind the Southwest Oklahoma Fit Kids Coalition. In fact, their motto follows that statement with “not OUR kids!”
Updates:
Bikes Make Life Better – Poster Contest – Kyle Rogers presented an upcoming 5th grade poster contest whose theme is “bikes make life better.” She asked the coalition if they wanted to sponsor a local contest and form a panel to pick a finalist and submit to the state. The contest would tie in directly and be marketed with the Fit Kids Fitness Trailway System and the newly develop Fitness in Action Series. The coalition agreed and Rogers will be moving forward to get information out to schools, after-school programs etc. Lisa Roberts of Medicine Park volunteered to help. Below is the link to the flyer and more information.
3rd Annual Easter Eggstravaganza – The City of Lawton is having its 3rd annual Easter egg hunt and has asked Fit Kids to participate and play games with the kids. Rogers asked the coalition if we could find a volunteer to attend. The event is Saturday March, 30, 2013 from 11 am – 1pm at Elmer Thomas Park. She indicated that Fit Kids has a number of games to play with the kids if the volunteer wanted to use them or could come up with something on their own. The coalition still needs someone to volunteer as no one did so in the meeting.
Central Mall – Kid’s World – Jennifer Holland indicated that the Fit Kids was ready to take on the Kid’s World program at the mall and asked LaVeta what the next steps were from here. Rogers and Holland will be working to contact the Manager at Central Mall to establish a contract.
Fitness in Action Series – Technicolor Run – Jennifer Holland and Lori Cummins announced the first ever Technicolor run which is part of the Fitness in Action Series. The event will be on Saturday, May 4 @ 9:31 am and starts at Cameron University Stadium Parking Lot. To register for the event or find more information you can visit fitnessinactionseries.com. SWAT 2nd Annual 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament – “Defying Deception” – Jessica Priest announced the Students Working Against Tobacco’s 2nd Annual 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament April 6th at Cameron University Aggie Gym. The event was well attended last year and they hope it expands even more. Fit Kids will be looking to partner with them on their snack offerings again this year.
Duty Rowe Fit Kids Fitness Trailway -
Faced with the dire consequences of the childhood obesity epidemic the Fit Kids of Southwest Oklahoma coalition created the Fit Kids Fitness Trailway as a way to get children and their families outdoors actively hiking and biking in one of the most beautiful areas of Oklahoma. Fully aware of the fact that the choices we make in how we live our lives affects the quality of life for every living thing on the face of planet earth. The Trailway’s interpretation centers focus on healthy choices for ourselves, our children, and all the inhabitants of the mixed grass prairies that the Refuge is dedicated to protect. Committed to “Protecting the Planet and Preserving the Lives of Our Children” the Trailway is a 34 mile bicycle trail on both sides of a two lane blacktop that runs through the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge connecting the communities of Lawton, Cache and Medicine Park to the Refuge, 14 miles of hiking trails, the gorgeous Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area on Fort Sill and a new Museum of Natural Sciences that is committed to wellness and conservation.
